Nigar Sultana to Lead Bangladesh in ODIs on Australia Tour
The Bangladesh Cricket Board has confirmed that Nigar Sultana Joty will continue to serve as the ODI captain for the team’s upcoming tour of Australia. Joty’s resignation from the T20 International captaincy midway through the Asian Games sparked speculation that the board may appoint a new captain. Bangladesh will engage in three one-day internationals against Australia during the tour.
BCB president Tamim Iqbal and women’s wing chairperson Rafiqul Islam Babu convened a meeting with the female cricket players at the BCB headquarters on Monday, September 28, 2026, to address the captaincy issue and other concerns that were affecting the squad. During this meeting, Rafiqul Islam Babu made the official announcement regarding Nigar Sultana’s future position.
Rafiqul was quoted as saying, “I announced it today (during the meeting) that ‘you (Joty) are remaining as the captain and will go to Australia as the captain.'”
The coach’s most recent remarks are addressed by the board.
The confirmation of Nigar Sultana as captain is in accordance with the recent inconsistent results of the Bangladesh women’s team.
Earlier in 2026, the team emerged victorious in the World Cup qualifiers without suffering a loss. However, they suffered a 2-1 defeat to Sri Lanka at home, experienced inconsistent outcomes in a Scotland-Netherlands tri-series, and only managed to win two of their five World Cup games.
“Our coach made some indiscreet remarks that no one wanted to hear.” I believe that his remarks exceeded the bounds of the code of conduct. He is prohibited from making such statements due to his contractual obligations to the BCB. Babu observed, “He has already stated it, and that is extremely regrettable.”
“We have not yet issued any show-cause notice.” We did not anticipate this behaviour from him, as he is a highly experienced coach. He is one of the principal coaches employed by the cricket board. Therefore, we were not anticipating this behaviour from him. He concluded, “I stated in the media that he committed a grave error.”
