Delhi Capitals Appoint Chaminda Vaas as Fast Bowling Coach

Chaminda Vaas, a renowned Sri Lankan left-arm bowler, has joined the Delhi Capitals as a bowling coach for the upcoming IPL 2027, marking a significant new move. DC made the announcement via a social media video posted to their official account.

Chaminda Vaas, one of Sri Lanka’s most successful new ball bowlers, has competed in 439 international matches across all formats since retiring from cricket in 2012.

It is worth noting that the cricket team has hired Chaminda Vaas as a fast bowling coach. This suggests that in order to command the team’s pace bowling unit, he will only work with Mitchell Starc, Lungi Ngidi, Mukesh Kumar, Auqib Nabi, and Dushmantha Chameera.

Notably, Vaas is a Level 3 qualified cricket coach with a professional coaching qualification. His areas of specialization are youth academy structures, tactical bowling, high-performance training, and left-arm seam/swing mechanics.

In terms of bowling coaching experience, he has worked as an elite consultant for New Zealand and Ireland, as well as with the Sri Lanka Senior Men’s Team on multiple occasions.

Vaas’ reputation as a bowler is bolstered by his cricket experience. Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar, two of India’s finest players, have been his opponents throughout his all-format cricket career; he has defeated them six and twelve times, respectively.

Chaminda Vaas has 400 ODI and 355 Test wickets under his belt. In the 50-over format, his best scores are 8 for 19. Between 2007 and 2010, he bowled for the Deccan Chargers in the IPL, earning 18 wickets in 13 innings. His best IPL statistics were 3/21 with an average of 19.72.

Chaminda Vaas has considerable coaching expertise.

Chaminda Vaas’ coaching experience includes managing youth coaching networks in Colombo and Jaffna to recruit, develop, and train outstanding athletes while acting as the head coach of the Jaffna Stallions Cricket Academy.

From 2016 to 2021, he was Sri Lanka Cricket’s academy lead and consultant coach, carefully guiding emerging players in the high-performance center.

In between, he was New Zealand Cricket’s fast bowling coach from October to November of 2012. He also served as a bowling consultant for the Ireland cricket team in 2016.

He has since been the head bowling coach for Sri Lanka’s men’s national squad, beginning in 2017. In 2021, he was appointed lead fast bowling coach for the West Indies national tour.

Chaminda Vaas is anticipated to add to the Delhi Capitals’ seasoned lineup, which already features Sourav Ganguly and Yuvraj Singh, given to his previous appearances for Sri Lanka and vast scouting experience.
