Tim David Joins Tasmania Squad to Chase 2027 World Cup Dream
In a bid to clinch a berth in Australia’s 2027 ODI World Cup squad for South Africa, 30-year-old T20 standout Tim David has been selected for Tasmania’s upcoming 50-over regional championships. David has not played a 50-over match since replacing the injured Glenn Maxwell during a bilateral series in South Africa prior to the 2023 World Cup, when he appeared in four ODIs. David makes his long-awaited return to List A cricket.
Tasmanian coach Jeff Vaughan confirmed the news on Friday, clarifying how Tim David‘s franchise commitments and domestic schedule align. According to Vaughan, David has been eager to seize this opportunity for some time, and the timing now allows him to balance his international league responsibilities with Australian domestic cricket.
Why is Tim David playing domestic 50-over cricket again?
Tim David’s return to domestic 50-over cricket coincides with Australia’s ODI team’s middle order problems. Since Glenn Maxwell’s retirement, the team has failed to complete games and has been vulnerable in all four ODI series this year, including a recent loss to South Africa. David has the opportunity to establish himself in the format and argue for a spot at the 2027 World Cup in South Africa.
Tim David has not had a state contract since his first season in Western Australia, before moving to Singapore. Due to his absence of a contract with Cricket Australia, he has been able to bypass bilateral ODI series and pursue opportunities in domestic T20 events throughout the world. He hasn’t played cricket since the European T20 Premier League in mid-September and lives in Perth when he’s not playing overseas.
Tim David’s role in Tasmania will be what?
Vaughan detailed his expectations for David’s 50-over batting strategy. The coach confirmed that Tim David will bat in the middle order, with the option of changing positions depending on the game conditions. Vaughan explained the batter’s tactical deployment.
With roughly 15 overs remaining in the innings, Vaughan noted that David’s role in the last overs of a 50-over game would be similar to his T20 duties. The coach went into greater information about David’s engagement, including timing and tactics.
Prior to his return, Tim David List had a record
On Monday, November 16, Tasmania will face Queensland. The five-match T20I series against England begins on November 21, with Australia’s ODI series against England slated for November 13, 15, and 18. Only if Tim David is selected for the England series will he be called up to the ODI squad.
Tim David’s involvement with Tasmania, according to Vaughan, would extend beyond a single visit. The coach noted that schedule conversations were still ongoing to accommodate David’s availability, in addition to his franchise commitments and potential Australian white-ball matches.

Before his comeback, David had minimal experience with List A. Following an impressive England One-Day Cup season for Surrey, in which he scored two hundreds and was undefeated in eight innings, he played one 50-over match for Tasmania in November 2021. In 2019, he only played five Associate matches for Singapore in List A cricket.
