Nic Maddinson Says Second Outing in Durban Was a Huge Relief
Nic Maddinson was recalled to open the batting for Australia in the first Test against South Africa at Kingsmead in Durban, making his international comeback after nearly a decade.
He had played all three of his prior Tests by late 2016. Nic Maddinson was treated for testicular cancer last year and joined Australia’s touring party on October 1, 2026, just eight days before the first Test began on October 9.
On the first day of the match, Australia skipper Pat Cummins chose to bat in bright sunshine. Maddinson struggled in his first innings, scoring 0 from 33 balls before being removed by Marco Jansen, who caught him after he chopped. The start left him with a lot to prove when Australia batted again.
On the third evening, he hooked Jansen’s opening delivery to the boundary and went on to score 48 off 38 balls, giving Australia momentum for the second innings. His quick contribution allowed Australia to declare with enough time left to pursue a result.
McDonald’s evaluation of Nic Maddinson dual method.
Head coach Andrew McDonald evaluated Maddinson’s play in both innings, noting the varying demands each posed. McDonald, one of Australia’s three selectors along with George Bailey and Tony Dodemaide, acknowledged that Maddinson had adjusted his strategy to match the match situation despite the first-innings setback.
McDonald emphasized the thorough decision-making process that resulted in Madison’s recall. When considering prospects for the starting position in the series opener, the selectors took into account a number of variables.
