Gautam Gambhir Calls Sanju Samson’s England Omission ‘Toughest Decision’

Gautam Gambhir has termed keeping Sanju Samson out of the England series as an extremely difficult selection decision during his coaching career. Samson was a member of India’s T20 World Cup-winning squad earlier this year, where he was named Player of the Tournament after scoring 97 not out, 89, and 89 in the final three matches.

Samson was omitted after scoring five, zero, and one on tours of Ireland and England. Gautam Gambhir indicated that India intended to return to the World Cup-winning combination, and that a few setbacks did not discredit established players.

Samson’s Recall and Afghanistan Performance

Samson was called up for the Afghanistan T20I series that followed, and he appeared in all three games. He scored 117 runs in the series with a strike rate of 180, including two fifties. His effort included a 50 in the series-deciding match, following another half-century in the previous game.

Sooryavanshi’s patient waits for opportunity.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, the 15-year-old who replaced Samson in the England series, did not make the playing XI for any of the three T20Is against Afghanistan.

Gautam Gambhir explained the young player’s absence from the Afghanistan series as an exercise in patience.

The head coach acknowledged Sooryavanshi’s potential but explained his explanation for the decision.
