Yuvraj Singh Urges India to Avoid Major Changes Before 2027 ODI World Cup
Yuvraj Singh also urged the national selectors to pick their core squad well ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup rather than change things in the final few months before a mega-event. Referring to the World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia, Yuvraj said it will be important to give players consistent chances in the 50-over format.
Yuvraj, who was Player of the Tournament when India won the 2011 ODI World Cup, said a core team of about 16 to 20 should be determined and given enough match exposure. With T20 fixtures taking over international cricket at almost every level, he believes the reduced number of ODI matches on offer means every game is of special significance.
India kick off their 2027 World Cup preparation at home with a three-match ODI series against West Indies from September 27. Just question over Rohit Sharma international future and also the return of injury-prone allrounder Hardik Pandya still to be decided on, with Ajit Agarkar headed the selection committee.
Yuvraj emphasized that India should pick only those players who can change the course of the match, not just cater a squad around the number of allrounders. He felt like the core combination should be pretty solidified and one or two spots should be dictated by pitch/opposition.
The former left-arm pacer also cited the example of Australia dominating major tournaments. He’s of the opinion that championship sides always have a number of game-changers, players who alone can tilt the contest and his side is able to respond even when under pressure.
Yuvraj also urged India to maintain the level of consistency which they have shown in their last T20 World Cup campaigns. In 2024 and 2026, India claimed successive men’s T20 World Cup wins and came to the final of the 50-over World Cup in 2023.
Yuvraj isn’t just preparing for the World Cup as he is also associated with the Canada Super 60, where he is a co-owner. The men will play at six teams and women three, all to be held from Sept.
Yuvraj has also said this tournament could expand cricket in Canada while providing locals opportunities. Former India pacer Zaheer Khan is also associated with Vancouver Anchors as co-owner.
